Palate

Greeted with a bright and vibrant entry, showcasing a harmonious blend of fruity flavors and a touch of hazelnut. Subtle notes of vanilla and oak add depth and richness, while the finish is enduringly savory, leaving a lasting impression with its lingering citrus notes. This wine's well-integrated acidity and balanced structure make it refreshing and satisfying.

Nose

The KARIA Chardonnay offers a refined and elegant aromatic profile. On the nose, it reveals layers of ripe pear, golden apple, and lemon zest, intertwined with delicate notes of vanilla and toasted almond from oak aging. Subtle hints of brioche and white flowers add depth and sophistication. The overall impression is fresh, graceful, and beautifully balanced, showcasing both the vibrancy of Napa Valley fruit and the finesse of Stag’s Leap winemaking.

Winemaking

The KARIA Chardonnay is crafted with a focus on balance, freshness, and elegance—hallmarks of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ style. The grapes are hand-harvested from select Napa Valley vineyards, chosen for their cool microclimates that preserve natural acidity and aromatic purity. After gentle pressing, the juice undergoes fermentation in a combination of French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks, allowing both richness and vibrancy to develop. A portion of the wine is aged on the lees (sur lie) with regular stirring to enhance texture and complexity, while malolactic fermentation is partially completed to maintain freshness. The final blend is aged for several months in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, imparting subtle notes of vanilla and spice. The result is a Chardonnay that is creamy yet crisp, elegantly structured, and beautifully balanced.

The name KARIA (KAR-ee-ah) is derived from the Greek word care means graceful, and the 2023 KARIA Chardonnay lives up to its name. It shows how grapes from selected cold-climate vineyards in the southern Napa Valley can be vinified and blended into a seamless integration of fruit flavors as crisp as sharp acidity and subtle oak spices. U. C. A. or A. C. C. A.: that'S KARIA.

The 2023 Vintage could be the vintage of the decade. It is among the coldest growing seasons in the Napa Valley in the last ten years, resulting in wines that are exceptionally aromatic, expressive and have strong potential to age in the decades to come.

Winter brought heavy rains that filled the reservoirs and enriched the soils with lasting saturation. The two-year average rainfall in 2021 and 2022 was 17.5 inches. In 2023, that figure doubled to 39.6 inches at our estate.

Cooling conditions resulted in a later-than-average bud break in mid-April, with continued cold weather throughout flowering. Summer was a classic for Napa Valley. Warm and sunny days, combined with cool sea breezes in the late afternoon and evening, persisted throughout the season, resulting in a slow and even baking period.
