Le Macchiole
Le Macchiole was one of the first wineries established in the viticultural zone of Bolgheri, located approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Florence along the Etruscan Coast in Tuscany. Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife, Cinzia, since 2002. Located in Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region, Le Macchiole has, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest vines in Bolgheri. In 1987, Campolmi hired famed oenologist Vittorio Fiore as a consultant before being joined by Luca d'Attoma years later. In contrast to his renowned neighbors who focused on Bordeaux blends, Le Macchiole concentrates on achieving the purest expression of individual varieties, crafting distinct wines of unprecedented quality. Soon, Le Macchiole joined Sassicaia and Ornellaia as two of the most prestigious estates in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah, and, most importantly, Cabernet Franc, a variety that can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole. A unique and unmistakable character marks all of their wines. Full-bodied wines, yet with clean and elegant flavors, leading to great freshness and finesse, are incredibly sought after worldwide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
