Château d’Issan

Château d’Issan
The history of Château d'Issan consists mainly of a long list of property transfers and inheritances. Through inheritance and marriage, the estate passed from owner to owner, and all contributed in their own way to its fame and to the formation of its unique character. In the 12th century the property was a domain then named La Mothe-Cantenac, later becoming Théobon Manor when an heiress married a gentleman of that name. For nearly three centuries, the estate was passed down to families with names such as Noailhan, Meyrac, Ségur, Salignac, de la Vergne, Escodeca de Boisse, etc. Since 1575, the estate has been owned by five generations of the Essenault family, who changed its name to "Issan" and thus Château d'Issan was born. Between the two world wars, the estate was unfortunately left to deteriorate, but was brought back to life by the Cruse family, who owned it in 1945. Under the leadership of Lionel Cruse, the castle was restored, the winemaking facilities were modified and the vineyard replanted. Since 1998, as a result of the investments made by Lionel's son, Emmanuel Cruse, both in the vineyard and in the winery, Château d'Issan wines have become a faithful reflection of their exclusive terroir. In 2012, Françoise and Jacky Lorenzetti, who own Château Lilian Ladouys in Saint-Estèphe and Château Pédesclaux in Pauillac as well, joined forces with the Cruse family. With tenacity, passion and courage, the different generations have worked together to achieve the renewal of Château d'Issan, which has regained its former glory.
