Château Palmer

In 1814, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Palmer's name was on everyone's lips. His conquests, both military and romantic, had built the reputation of this future Major General of the British Army and aide-de-camp to the future King George IV. Madame Marie Brunet de Ferrière, widow of Baron de Gascq, fell under his spell. Sitting by his side on a long journey from Bordeaux to Paris, the young widow sold him the Médoc wine estate she had just inherited. Without even visiting it, this son of a brewer from Bath became the owner of the Gascq estate, which was famous for the quality of its wines since the beginning of the 18th century. Over a period of nearly 30 years, this gentleman expanded and modernized the estate, laying the foundation for his timeless style. His true aspiration was not to amass wealth, but to make his mark on the world. Ultimately, the investments proved too costly for Palmer, now a major-general, and he was forced to sell the property to his creditors, the Caisse hypothécaire, in 1843. Charles Palmer died before he could see his property ranked among the largest Bordeaux wines in 1855, but today its legacy is undeniable. He gave Palmer the name, the style, and revealed to the world its finesse and strength of character, while charting the path of passion, dedication, and sacrifice that leads to great wine.
