Winemaking
The winemaking of Marchese Antinori Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione reflects a blend of tradition, precision, and respect for terroir. The wine is produced exclusively from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown on the Badia a Passignano estate, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area at altitudes of about 250–300 meters. The vineyards are planted on calcareous-clay and limestone soils, ideal for expressing the varietal’s elegance and structure. After hand harvesting, the grapes are carefully destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with maceration on the skins for about 10–14 days to extract color, aroma, and tannins. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to enhance smoothness and complexity. It is then aged for approximately 12–14 months in Hungarian oak barrels, stored in the historic cellars beneath the medieval Badia a Passignano abbey. The natural humidity and temperature of these ancient cellars create ideal conditions for slow, balanced maturation. Finally, the wine rests in the bottle before release, allowing it to integrate and develop its signature harmony of fruit, structure, and elegance—a hallmark of Antinori’s craftsmanship and the Chianti Classico terroir.
