Castelvecchio

The Karst is renowned for the historical events that shook Europe and changed the destiny of Italy at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. The portion of the Karst where the Castelvecchio Vineyards are located was a theatre of battle of World War I, which took these lands away from the Hapsburg Empire, including the villa itself, which was the headquarters of the Italian command for part of the war. In the ‘80s, the first vineyards were planted, and the property now extends to 120 hectares. The decisive element for the success of grape cultivation then, as it is now, was water availability. Thanks, in fact, to the typical phenomena of this karst land, below the challenging rocky surface lie natural basins in which water collects and is held. From these wells, a drip-irrigation piping system extends over countless kilometers, bringing the life-giving water to the vines' roots.
