Château Pape Clément

Château Pape Clément
Planted in 1300, the vineyard at Château Pape-Clément is the oldest in Bordeaux. In 1306, upon the appointment of Bertrand de Goth, Archbishop of Bordeaux, as pope, the vineyard took his papal name - Clement V. He is also the one who gives it as a gift to his successor - Cardinal Arnaud de Canteloup. Bertrand is the one who planted red grape varieties. The white grape varieties were planted along the river near Lormont. Château Pape-Clément remained the property of the Archbishops of Bordeaux until nationalization in the French Revolution of 1789. After the Revolution, various owners succeeded each other at the helm of the winery, making it the second in the region, after Haut-Brion, by the mid-19th century. Although under Jean-Baptiste Clerc the wines sold at Médoc prices, subsequent owners, including the Englishman Maxwell, neglected the estate, causing it to decline until World War II. Beginning in 1939, Château Pape-Clément was revitalized by Paul Montagne, the results of the rebuilding from scratch being visible only from 1949. Since the employment of oenologist Émile Peynaud, Pape-Clément wines experienced a meteoric rise, being described by David Peppercorn as the most important in Pessac-Talence, after Haut-Brion and La Mission. After the death of Paul Montagne, his son, Léo Montagne followed at the helm, together with Bernard Magrez, the owner of Château La Tour Carnet and who hired Michel Rolland as a consultant.
