Palate
The palate is rich, sophisticated, and intense, defined by supple vibrant tannins followed by a long persistent finish.
Nose
The nose is complex: notes of ripe plums, blackberries and candied orange peels lead to pleasant aromas of dark chocolate, caramel, and licorice. Sweet hints of tobacco fulfill this impressive bouquet.
Winemaking
Fermentation in truncated conical tanks, each individual must be macerated on the skins giving particular emphasis to preserving aromas, extracting color, and encouraging desirable tannins that were supple and elegant. Once separated from the skins, the wine was transferred into small oak barrels where the malolactic fermentation occurred to accentuate aromatic finesse and complexity. Aging in French oak barrels and a small percentage in Hungarian oak, predominantly new barrels, for approximately 15 months. An additional 12 months of aging in the bottle before being released.
Tignanello is a milestone, being the first Sangiovese aged in barriques and the first contemporary red wine to blend non-traditional varieties (especially Cabernet). It is produced from Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
The label was designed by Silvio Coppola in 1974 for the release of Tignanello 1971. Silvio Coppola was an important Italian graphic and interior designer, famous for his minimalist lighting fixtures and austere furniture and also for book cover designs for the Italian publishing company Feltrinelli.
