Palate
The taste opens with juicy notes of ripe cherry, red plum, and raspberry, followed by subtle hints of violet and sweet spices. Mid-palate, it reveals silky yet structured tannins that give the wine depth and persistence. Delicate flavors of vanilla, cocoa, and toasted oak emerge from barrel aging, blending beautifully with touches of leather, herbs, and mineral undertones. The finish is long, fresh, and harmonious, with lingering impressions of red fruit, spice, and a gentle balsamic note that speaks to the elegance of its Chianti Classico terroir.
Nose
It opens with intense aromas of ripe cherries and wild berries, followed by delicate floral notes of violet and dried rose petals. Subtle hints of Mediterranean herbs and balsamic tones add freshness and complexity. As the wine evolves, layers of vanilla, cocoa, and sweet tobacco emerge from its time in Hungarian oak. A final touch of orange zest and earthy minerality completes the bouquet, creating an elegant and harmonious aromatic experience.
Winemaking
The winemaking of Marchese Antinori Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione reflects a blend of tradition, precision, and respect for terroir. The wine is produced exclusively from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown on the Badia a Passignano estate, located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area at altitudes of about 250–300 meters. The vineyards are planted on calcareous-clay and limestone soils, ideal for expressing the varietal’s elegance and structure. After hand harvesting, the grapes are carefully destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with maceration on the skins for about 10–14 days to extract color, aroma, and tannins. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to enhance smoothness and complexity. It is then aged for approximately 12–14 months in Hungarian oak barrels, stored in the historic cellars beneath the medieval Badia a Passignano abbey. The natural humidity and temperature of these ancient cellars create ideal conditions for slow, balanced maturation. Finally, the wine rests in the bottle before release, allowing it to integrate and develop its signature harmony of fruit, structure, and elegance—a hallmark of Antinori’s craftsmanship and the Chianti Classico terroir.
2021 in Chianti Classico will be remembered foralong, patient growing season:avintage able to produce wines of powerand elegance. Winter temperatures were never extremely cold, and the area experienced rain showers up until the end of March. The onset of spring prompted early budbreak, however, the vines’vegetative cycle slowed down in April due to cool dry climate conditions. The months of May and June followed normal weather trends, temperatures were never too hot with scattered rain showers that did not interfere with optimal flowering and fruit set of Sangiovese berries. Overall, the summer season was hotand dry, especiallyin August, although at the end of the month light precipitation provided the needed moisture to begin an ideal ripening phase. Septemberand October were picture perfect: sunnyskies, gentle breezes with no extreme heatand cooler nighttime temperatures thatallowed the grapes to ripen gradually. The 2021 vintage is considered to be one of the bestvintages ever in Chianti Classico. Harvesting activities for Badiaa Passignano began late Septemberand were completed mid-October.
