Galicea Mare Estate

Galicea Mare is the heir to an exceptional historical legacy. Prince George Constantin Bibescu, married to the equally renowned Martha Bibescu, inherited the estate’s lands from his grandfather, Gheorghe Bibescu, the Ruler of Romania between 1842 and 1848. The first vines were planted in 1912, and construction of the winery began in 1915. The first wine was produced in 1916, and ever since then the winery has crafted wines every single year up to the present day.

A large part of the estate’s history was lost during the communist period, but it is quite remarkable that the viticultural tradition was preserved nonetheless. An additional 35 hectares of vineyards were planted, and the land and buildings were maintained. After 1989, however, the winery and vineyards went through a period of neglect and even vandalism. In 2016, the property was purchased by Iosefin Florea, who began restoration work that same year. The vineyards were restructured and replanted, and the production line was modernized, making Moșia Galicea Mare likely the most technologically advanced winery in Romania. The estate’s land is organically farmed, and the wines are fermented exclusively with indigenous yeasts, without any additives except for a minimal amount of sulfur at bottling. On a 50-hectare estate, 60,000 bottles are produced annually. From the roadside, the estate greets viewers and visitors with regal elegance, wrapped in white tones that echo through the disciplined rows of vines—an homage from today’s owner to those of the past, George and Martha Bibescu.
